Corneen
Through our Corneen Wind Farm on the Slieve Rushen mountain, near Ballyconnell in County Cavan, we make around €6,000 per year available for local projects promoting energy efficiency and social sustainability through our Community Fund programme.
In 2023, due to the increasing level of demand for this Community Fund, SSE Renewables has taken the decision to start awarding funding from the Corneen Community Fund every two years rather than every year to maximise funding opportunities. The new biannual fund for 2023 and 2024 was circ. €10,000.
Corneen Wind Farm has a total generation capacity of 3MW and produces enough renewable energy to power almost 2,000 homes in the region.
This biennial fund opened on Monday, 28 April 2025 and closed on Friday, 23 May 2025.
We welcome applications from not-for-profit organisations, community groups, and social enterprises that create sustainable, scalable impact in their local areas. This includes:
- Groups based within the Area of Benefit
- Groups based outside the 20km radius, that deliver measurable impact to communities within the Area of Benefit.

This fund supports projects that empower communities and strengthens resilience, particularly projects that address local challenges through inclusive, innovative, and sustainable solutions, and are also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) & SSE’s Community Funding Strategic Objectives.
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs):
Projects should align with one or more of the following UN SDGs:
- SDG 4 - Quality Education: Promote inclusive, equitable and lifelong learning opportunities
- SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy: Support access to renewable energy and energy efficiency
- SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities: Build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable local environments
- SDG 13 - Climate Action: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
SSE’s Community Funding Strategic Objectives
Projects must also contribute to at least one of the following Strategic Objectives:
- Empowering Communities for Green Transition:
Supporting community-led initiatives that reduce carbon emissions, promote sustainable resource use, and enhance environmental stewardship through clean energy, low-carbon technologies, circular economy practices, climate-resilient infrastructure, and biodiversity activities. - Sustainable Communities – Resilience, Equity and Learning:
Promoting social equity, well-being, and economic resilience through inclusive community infrastructure, accessible education and skill-building programmes, social enterprise, and health-focused initiatives that strengthen community capacity and opportunity.
Together, we power local change to build stronger, greener, and more sustainable communities for current and future generations.

Sustainable Infrastructure - €1,000 awarded
With support from SSE Renewables’ Corneen Community Fund, Drummany Spirit Group has installed a solar-powered, compostable, wheelchair-accessible toilet – providing a dignified, environmentally responsible solution to a long-standing accessibility challenge.
Located in rural Co. Cavan, the Healing Spirit Festival welcomes people in recovery, those living with mental health challenges, and the wider community to a safe, drug- and alcohol-free space. Until now, the lack of accessible sanitation excluded many from full participation.
This new facility directly addresses that gap. It meets the needs of wheelchair users, older people, families, and anyone requiring additional space or privacy. Operating fully off-grid, it uses solar energy for lighting and composting technology for waste management – eliminating the need for chemical toilets and significantly reducing environmental impact.
This facility will remain in place for all future events and gatherings, becoming a permanent feature of an evolving, inclusive space rooted in wellness, connection and nature. By prioritising accessibility, sustainability, and dignity, the project supports long-term goals around inclusion, resilience and climate action - setting a model for rural, off-grid festivals and community spaces.
“This isn't just a toilet - it's a way to make sure everyone feels welcome, safe, and supported at our events.”
Lorraine Teevan, Secretary, Drummany Spirit Group

Sustaining the Future - €4,650 awarded
Bawnboy Tidy Towns has delivered a series of thoughtful, sustainable enhancements that are helping to shape a greener, more connected village. With funding from SSE Renewables Corneen Community Fund, the group has implemented a Pollinator Plan, installed Water Butts to support eco-friendly flower care, and placed a commemorative bench to honour those lost during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Pollinator Plan has guided the group’s planting strategy, ensuring that Bawnboy provides a safe and diverse habitat for bees and other pollinators. Wildflower areas, native planting, and reduced mowing have already seen an increase in biodiversity around the village.
To support this growth in a sustainable way, water butts have been installed at key points in the village, allowing volunteers to collect rainwater for flower beds and planters—reducing reliance on treated water and promoting responsible resource use.
A commemorative bench now sits at a quiet spot in the village, offering a place for reflection and remembrance. It serves as a lasting tribute to those who passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic and provides a space for residents to pause and connect.
Together, these small but meaningful projects are enhancing village life, promoting sustainability, and leaving a legacy of care—for nature, for people, and for the future.
“This project is about more than planting flowers—it’s about caring for our environment and our community. We’re proud of what’s been achieved and grateful for the support.”
Teresa McCaffrey, Assistant Secretary, Bawnboy Tidy Towns Committee

Growing Together - €3,170 awarded
With funding support from SSE Renewables Corneen Community Fund, Daisy Hill Gardens has transformed into a thriving hub for growing, learning, and connection. The project funded much-needed upgrades to the polytunnel and Community Shed, creating a more functional and welcoming space for all.
The garden is cared for by a dedicated team of local volunteer gardeners, Community Shed members, and Community Employment participants. Together, they grow fresh produce and flowers in the tunnel, extending the growing season and reducing the need to buy plants in future years.
Upgrades to the Community Shed have turned it into a comfortable space to meet, socialise, and take breaks, encouraging new members to join and get involved. For many, it’s become a place of wellbeing and shared purpose.
What was once a basic green space is now a vibrant, productive community garden, offering opportunities to learn, connect, and contribute—no matter your age or experience. The impact goes beyond plants—it’s about people, and Daisy Hill Gardens continues to grow as a place where community takes root.
“This project has brought real life to the garden. The tunnel helps us grow more, and the Community Shed is a warm space to gather, rain or shine. It’s helped people come together and feel part of something.”
Annette Coyle, Manager, Daisy Hill Garden
