Knockastanna

Through our Knockastanna Wind Farm close to the Limerick and Tipperary border we make over €10,000 per year available for community projects.

In 2023, due to the increasing level of demand for this Community Fund, SSE Renewables has taken the decision to start awarding funding from the Knockastanna Community Fund every two years rather than every year to maximise funding opportunities. The new biannual fund for 2023 and 2024 was circ. €19,000.

Knockastanna Wind Farm has a capacity of 6MW and produces enough green energy to power almost 4,000 homes.

Lighting the Way to Sustainability - €17,306 awarded

Cullen Lattin AFC is proud to lead by example in creating a greener, more resilient community. With funding from the SSE Renewables Knockastanna Community Fund, the club has delivered a series of impactful upgrades that benefit both people and the planet.

Most recently, the club invested in Astro Turf brushes to help maintain pitch quality, improve player safety, and extend the surface’s lifespan. In recent years, they also upgraded their Astro Turf pitch floodlighting to energy-saving LED lights, reducing electricity usage by 50%, from 6,400 watts to 3,200 watts.

These practical and meaningful investment reflects SSE’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable development. By reducing both energy use and operating costs, the club has made its facilities more accessible and affordable for local schools, teams, and families, while also reducing carbon emissions and making real progress on the journey to net zero.

Additional improvements include, LED lighting upgrades to the clubhouse and walking track, and the installation of a community-accessible defibrillator. Together, these efforts demonstrate how small, local action can support UN Goal 13: Climate Action and Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, delivering long-term environmental and social benefits. They also highlight the vital role clubs play in local climate leadership and sustainable community development.

"We’re proud to be making this step toward sustainability. These upgrades are not just cutting costs—we’re cutting emissions and creating a better future for our community.”

Anne Bradshaw, PR and Funding Officer, Cullen Lattin AFC
