– The Nordex Group to supply and install its N133/4.8 onshore wind turbines at SSE and FuturEnergy Ireland joint venture project –
– Nordex to ensure turbine operations through long-term Premium Service agreement –
– Sorensen Civil Engineering and Omexom also confirmed for Drumnahough project delivery –
The Nordex Group has been awarded the contract to manufacture and install 12 onshore turbines for the 58MW Drumnahough Wind Farm in County Donegal.
The announcement follows confirmation earlier this month by joint venture partners SSE and FuturEnergy Ireland that pre-construction works have commenced at Drumnahough ahead of civil engineering works beginning in the coming weeks. Drumnahough Wind Farm will be constructed at a site in rural upland Donegal, 13km from Letterkenny and in the townlands of Treankeel, Meenadaura, Carrickalangan and Cark.
In addition to supplying and installing its N133/4.8 wind turbines at Drumnahough, the Nordex Group will also ensure dependable turbine operation at the wind farm once it is fully operational through a long-term Premium Service agreement.
Delivery of turbine components will take place in early 2027, with Killybegs Harbour in Donegal serving as the main entry point for components, supporting efficient logistics and local supply chain investment. Turbine installation is expected to commence at the site later that year.
The Nordex Group has indicated, where possible, that it will work with and use local contractors, suppliers and businesses for as many parts of the turbine installation and operational phases of Drumnahough Wind Farm. This comprises, among other opportunities, cranes for the installation phase and crane support for service and maintenance, electrical contractors for finishing works, and suppliers for tooling.
The Drumnahough contract agreement represents the latest collaboration between the Nordex Group and SSE Renewables, which is leading the project’s construction and delivery. In 2023 SSE Renewables ordered 29 turbines from Nordex for its 101MW Yellow River wind farm in Offaly, Ireland, which is now fully operational, and earlier this month the Nordex Group and SSE Renewables announced a new order for two onshore wind projects totalling 42MW in Spain.
Patrick Greene, Construction Projects Director at SSE Renewables, said:
“With construction due to begin in the coming weeks, the appointment of the Nordex Group as turbine provider marks a significant milestone in progressing Drumnahough Wind Farm. We value Nordex’s commitment to leveraging the local supply chain wherever possible and look forward to collaborating closely with them throughout the construction phase of the project.”
Jason Welch, Managing Director UK & Ireland at the Nordex Group, said:
“We’re pleased to have been awarded the contract to manufacture and install turbines for the Drumnahough wind farm – another important milestone in Ireland’s renewable energy journey. With the N133’s suitability for high wind locations and our long-term service commitment, at Nordex, we’re proud to continue to deliver as a trusted, dependable partner in the Irish onshore sector.”
In addition to the appointment of the Nordex Group as turbine provider, Sorensen Civil Engineering has been appointed to deliver the Civil Balance of Plant (CBoP) contract for Drumnahough while Omexom has been awarded the Electrical Balance of Plant (EBoP) contract.
Delivery of new renewable energy generation at Drumnahough marks another important contribution by co-development partners SSE Renewables and FuturEnergy Ireland towards Ireland’s Climate Action Plan commitments.
When fully operational, Drumnahough Wind Farm will bring Ireland another step closer to meeting its 2030 renewables and decarbonisation targets and to assisting the State’s security of supply goals.
