** Construction to begin on a trio of projects in northern Spain and southern Italy **
SSE has taken final investment decisions to begin construction on a trio of new onshore wind farms in southern Italy and northern Spain.
Delivery of the projects will result in 52MW of new onshore wind installed capacity for SSE Renewables and takes the company’s pipeline of in-construction onshore projects in southern Europe to 133MW currently. SSE is already constructing a 64MW wind farm in northern Spain and a 17MW project in southern Italy, and is operating a 27MW wind farm in France.
In northern Spain, construction will begin on the 23MW Portalrubio Wind Farm and on the adjoining 19MW Minguez Wind Farm, both in the Teruel region of Aragón. The combined projects will comprise seven onshore wind turbines manufactured and installed by Nordex Group as well as associated wind farm infrastructure. The Delta4000 turbines will be manufactured at Nordex’s factory in Barásoain, northern Spain, supporting local supply chain content.
In southern Italy, site enabling works have started on the 10MW Tuturano Wind Farm in Puglia, which is being delivered near the 17MW Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva combined wind farm already in construction. The Tuturano project will comprise three onshore wind turbines manufactured and installed by Siemens Gamesa.
Richard Cave-Bigley, Director, Onshore Europe for SSE Renewables, said:
"I’m delighted we’ve taken final investment decisions to commence construction on 52MW of new onshore wind capacity at sites in Spain and Italy. We’ve taken these investment decisions in line with SSE’s always disciplined approach to project delivery and adherence to strict hurdle rates as we selectively build out our international pipeline. The addition of these projects in carefully selected markets grows our current portfolio of onshore wind projects in construction in southern Europe to 133MW.”
SSE Renewables continues to make steady progress in completing delivery of its first two in-construction onshore wind farms in southern Europe.
In northern Spain, Jubera Wind Farm (64MW) in La Rioja is approaching completion, while in southern Italy commissioning will begin shortly at the combined Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva (17MW) wind farm in Puglia.
