SSE has confirmed the appointment of Kirby Group Engineering and Sungrow as main contractors for the 100MW / 200MWh Derrymeen Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project near Dungannon in County Tyrone.

The announcement follows confirmation earlier this year that SSE Renewables has begun preparation and site enabling works at the Derrymeen BESS site ahead of construction activity commencing in the coming months.

Sungrow will supply the battery energy storage system technology for the Derrymeen project. Kirby Group Engineering will support the construction and integration of the battery storage facility including Balance of Plant (BoP) works. Construction activity at the site is expected to continue until late 2027.

Patrick Greene, Construction Projects Director at SSE Renewables, said:

“Mobilisation to site is now under way, with full construction set to commence in the coming weeks. The appointment of Kirby Group Engineering and Sungrow marks a significant milestone in advancing the Derrymeen Battery Energy Storage System project. Battery storage will play a crucial role in supporting the transition to a renewables-led electricity system, and we look forward to working closely with both partners throughout the construction phase.”

Leo Powell, Country Manager UK & Ireland at Sungrow, said:

“We are proud to support SSE Renewables in the delivery of the Derrymeen BESS project, a key step in accelerating the integration of renewable energy in Northern Ireland. By supplying our PowerTitan 2.0 battery energy storage system, we are supporting a more flexible grid in the region while reinforcing a strong and lasting collaboration with our key partner, SSE Renewables.”

Stephen Kavanagh, Kirby Business Unit Leader for Power and Renewables, said:

“This project marks a significant step forward in enhancing resilience across the Northern Ireland electricity network, as SSE Renewables drives decarbonisation and increases the amount of renewable energy available on the network. We look forward to delivering this critical investment and working closely with SSE Renewables and the community to generate lasting value in the region.”

Delivery of new flexible energy infrastructure at Derrymeen marks another important contribution by SSE Renewables towards supporting Northern Ireland’s transition to a cleaner and more resilient electricity system.

When fully operational, the 100MW / 200MWh Derrymeen Battery Energy Storage System will support the integration of renewable electricity onto the grid while helping enhance security of supply.
