Meentycat Energy Park

SSE is progressing plans for a repowering project at the site of the existing Meentycat and Culliagh wind farms, the proposed Meentycat Energy Park. Repowering would involve the dismantling and replacement of turbine equipment, with existing infrastructure on site, such as roads and grid connection equipment, being reused where possible.

SSE has operated Culliagh Wind Farm since 2000 and Meentycat Wind Farm since 2004. Together, both wind farms constitute over 100MW of clean energy, powering Irish homes and businesses and eliminating harmful carbon dioxide emissions from Ireland’s electricity fuel mix in addition to providing a significant economic boost locally.

Through the proposed Meentycat Energy Park, we are seeking to secure and extend renewable energy generation at these sites well into the future.

Community consultation and next steps

We are keen to work closely with the local community in Donegal from the early stage of development. Initial engagement began in February 2026 with a letter drop and door-to-door visits to nearby residents. This first letter forms part of a broader engagement programme, with further communication and consultation planned throughout 2026 and 2027.

Project overview

Culliagh Wind Farm’s 18 turbines have been operational for over twenty-five years, while Meentycat Wind Farm was Ireland’s largest wind farm when it became operational in 2004, with further extensions in 2009 bringing its number of turbines to 45; 63 in total across both wind farm sites.

To continue the provision of renewable energy at our Culliagh and Meentycat sites, and related community funding, we are now examining the potential to repower these wind farms – the proposed Meentycat Energy Park.

Repowering these wind farms would reduce the overall number of turbines. It would also deliver a range of benefits, including the continued use of existing wind farm sites, a significant increase in renewable energy generation, improved energy security, and is a more cost-effective alternative to developing entirely new wind farms.

Community benefit fund

The annual Culliagh and Meentycat Community Benefit Fund has already shared the value of renewable energy throughout the local community with over €1.7 million distributed via 857 individual grant awards to local projects since 2007. Both wind farms are also significant contributors to commercial rates, helping to fund improvements to infrastructure and services in County Donegal more widely.

If consented and constructed, an increased Meentycat Energy Park Community Benefit Fund would replace the existing fund once the wind farm becomes operational and would be subject to advanced community consultation.
