Tangy Repower

In 2019, SSE Renewables was granted consent by Scottish Ministers to construct and operate Tangy IV (Tangy Repower), a 16-turbine Wind Farm, which will replace the existing Tangy Wind Farm situated approximately 9km northwest of Campbeltown on the west coast of the Kintyre Peninsula in Argyll & Bute.

Following careful consideration and a detailed project feasibility review, SSE Renewables submitted a revised Scoping Report for Tangy IV (Tangy Repower) in July 2025.

Since the project’s consent in 2019, our project team has been working to progress the project towards construction. However, due to a range of economic challenges and technological advances, it will not be possible to progress the project in its current form. We are therefore seeking to amend the 2019 consent to allow for the turbines on site to have an increased tip height of up to 200 meters.

Tangy I & Tangy II had consent to operate until August 2022. SSE Renewables sought permission to extend the operational period to coincide with the planned end of the construction phase of Tangy IV.

A Section 42 Planning Application including Environmental Impact Assessment was therefore submitted to Argyll and Bute Council requesting an extension to the operational period. This was granted, allowing the existing wind farm to continue generating power until the end of 2026.

Next steps

SSE Renewables would like to thank everyone who attended our first round of Public Exhibitions in August to view the proposed variations for the consented Tangy Repower. Your input and feedback on the redesigns are vital to us.

We intend to run another round of Public Exhibitions around Spring 2026 ahead of submitting the Section 36C Variation application to the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit (ECU).

In the interim period, the project will be undertaking additional surveys and revising relevant Environmental Assessments to ensure that the varied designs’ impacts are fully considered and assessed.

Decommissioning Tangy

The existing operational Tangy Wind Farm comprises two developments (Tangy I and Tangy II) delivering an installed capacity of 18.7MW. Tangy I has 15 turbines, and Tangy II has 7 turbines.

Tangy Repower will include removing the existing 22 turbines, some of which have been generating since 2003, and replacing them with 16 more efficient modern turbines. Taking advantage of the advances in wind turbine design and technology will maximise output from the site and could see the installed site generating capacity increase from 18.7MW, potentially up to 96MW.

Tangy I & Tangy II had consent to operate until August 2022. SSE Renewables sought permission to extend the operational period to coincide with the planned end of the construction phase of Tangy IV.

A Section 42 Planning Application, including Environmental Impact Assessment, was therefore submitted to Argyll and Bute Council requesting an extension to the operational period. This was granted, allowing the existing wind farm to continue to generate until the end of 2026.

A further planning application to extend the life of the site again is anticipated due to changes in the programme. More information on this will follow in due course.
