Introducing the Shepway Energy Park

The Shepway Energy Park is located within Romney Marsh, north of Newchurch in Kent.

It is a proposed solar and battery development that would deliver circa 200 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity from solar PV and 400MW of battery storage capacity.

That is enough carbon-free electricity to power approximately 73,000 homes and save on average 49,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

At SSE Renewables we are committed to supporting a home-grown, resilient energy system, helping the UK meet its net zero targets, protecting the environments we work in and supporting local communities.

The Need

Energy security and climate change are two of the biggest threats our society faces. We need to act now by investing in clean energy solutions for everyone’s future.

Shepway Energy Park will play a vital role in delivering against national and local priorities around tackling climate change and generating more electricity from renewable sources.

Where are we now?

We have carried out initial environmental surveys at the project site; however, our proposals remain at an early stage in the development process.

We want to work in collaboration with the community and stakeholders to shape them.

In delivering Shepway Energy Park, we want to ensure that communities living and working in the area have a chance to engage and influence the direction we take.

Before progressing further with the project design, we are seeking your feedback on our initial proposals so that your comments can shape the project from the very start.

We conducted the first phase of early engagement about the Shepway Energy Park proposal from Wednesday 28 May 2025 to Sunday 20 July 2025.

This period marked the first opportunity for you to comment on our proposal.

We are currently reviewing your feedback from the first engagement phase and will re-engage with communities to further develop our proposals in early 2026.

An update to the local community for October 2025 can be viewed here

We’re experienced in successfully delivering major renewable energy projects across the UK. We’ve been developing, constructing and operating renewable energy projects for over 80 years, including onshore wind, offshore wind and pumped hydro.

We specialise in solar and battery storage projects and are a leading developer and operator of renewable energy generation.

We’re committed to progressing the delivery of a 1.2GW pipeline of solar and battery projects across the UK and Ireland and have an aim to provide solar projects across the UK to accelerate progress towards the UK governments net-zero ambitions.

We support the communities where we operate our renewables energy projects across the UK and Ireland, providing significant levels of community funding and positively contributing to the social, environmental and economic well-being of local communities.

We know this region well, having operated the Medway Power Station since 1995.
