Derrymeen Battery Storage Project

Derrymeen BESS is a 100MW/200MWh battery storage project currently under construction near Dungannon, County Tyrone, in Northern Ireland.
Site enabling works at the Derrymeen BESS site began in early 2026 ahead of construction activity commencing later in the year.
Construction is being delivered by lead contractors Sungrow and Kirby Group Engineering. Sungrow is supplying the battery energy storage system technology for Derrymeen while Kirby Group Engineering is supporting the construction and integration of the battery storage facility including Balance of Plant (BoP) works. Construction activity at the site is expected to continue until late 2027.
The delivery of the Derrymeen BESS is expected to bring significant economic and job creation benefits to Mid-Ulster and Northern Ireland during construction.
Once operational, Derrymeen’s 100MW/200MWh battery storage system would be capable of storing up to two hours of reserve electricity storage – enough back-up energy to power the equivalent of over *135,000 homes in Northern Ireland for up to two hours at a time.
The availability of this stored energy would provide Northern Ireland’s transmission system operator with access to a reliable and flexible power reserve, helping support security of electricity supply, maintain grid stability and enable more renewable electricity to connect to the grid.
