About Battery and Solar

Battery storage plays an important role in today’s energy system, enabling electricity to be stored and released when needed. This supports the integration of renewable generation onto the grid, providing greater flexibility and stability for electricity systems, and enhancing security of supply.

Solar generation harnesses the abundant power of the sun to bring renewable power onto the grid, complementing other low carbon generation technologies such as wind and hydro.

We have 231MW of battery energy storage system (BESS) and solar assets in operation in the UK, comprising 200MW of battery storage and 31MW of solar generation.

We are progressing a 4GW pipeline of secured battery storage and solar projects in the UK, Ireland and in Poland. This includes 570MW of new battery storage capacity under construction at sites in England and in Northern Ireland.

Supply Chain

With safety, sustainability and responsibility at the heart of all we do, we're keen to establish strong relationships with our suppliers because we know how critical they are to our business as we support a fair and just transition to a net zero future.

We follow the SSE sustainable procurement code and we include specific sustainability questions for potential suppliers during the procurement process in our tenders.

We work with independent third-parties to ensure supply chain transparency, which enables us to mitigate any potential risks on issues such as human rights abuses and modern slavery.

In addition, we are working with trade associations to ensure sector-wide traceability for solar technology, helping ensure our supply chain is free of human rights abuses.
