Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

Battery storage plays an important role in today’s energy system, enabling electricity to be stored and released when needed. This supports the integration of renewable generation onto the grid, providing greater flexibility and stability for electricity systems, and enhancing security of supply.

We have 200MW/400MWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) in operation in England, comprising our 50MW/100MWh Salisbury BESS in Wiltshire and our 150MW/300MWh Ferrybridge BESS in West Yorkshire.

We have a number of battery storage projects at different stages of development in the UK and Ireland as part of a 4GW secured pipeline of battery and solar projects. This includes 570MW of new battery storage capacity under construction in England and in Northern Ireland, including the 150MW/300MWh Fiddler’s Ferry BESS in Cheshire and the 320MW/640MWh Monk Fryston BESS in North Yorkshire, as well as the 100MW/200MWh Derrymeen BESS in Tyrone.

The following short video explains how battery energy storage works:

Battery storage is therefore a vital part of unlocking the path to net zero.

Once built, these battery assets will also benefit from the remote monitoring and energy trading services we offer through the SSE Enhance platform. The platform will integrate with the site control and monitoring systems and allow smart trading to maximise its value.
