Ferrybridge BESS

Ferrybridge BESS is a 150MW/300MWh capacity battery energy storage system located near Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire. It became fully operational in March 2026 and is one of Britain’s largest battery storage systems.

The system can operate for up to two hours at full output and can meet the equivalent peak electricity demand of almost a quarter of a million homes*. 

By providing rapid-response energy storage, Ferrybridge BESS plays an important role in balancing supply and demand and supporting the efficient and reliable operation of the UK’s electricity network. 

The site is located on the grounds of the former SSE-owned Ferrybridge power station, which was decommissioned in 2016.

Project history and progress

Ferrybridge BESS is SSE’s second operational battery storage system.

SSE Renewables took a final investment decision on the project in May 2023. Construction began in August 2023 and saw the installation of 136 battery units and a 132kV transformer at the site. 

Now operational, Ferrybridge BESS asset is capable of storing up to 300MWh of energy for flexible dispatch to the National Grid when needed. When called upon, the system can operate for up to two hours at a time during peak demand.
