Salisbury Battery Storage

Salisbury BESS is a 50MW/100MWh capacity battery energy storage system located at Salisbury in Wiltshire, England. It entered full operations in April 2024, becoming SSE’s first operational battery storage asset.

The system comprises 26-battery units on a site next to the old Quidhampton Quarry in Salisbury. The project was delivered in conjunction with technology partner, Wärtsilä.

Salisbury BESS can operate for up to two hours at full output and can meet the equivalent peak electricity demand of over 80,000 UK homes*. 

By providing rapid-response energy storage, Salisbury BESS plays an important role in balancing supply and demand and supporting the efficient and reliable operation of the UK’s electricity network.
