Monk Fryston Battery Storage Project

Monk Fryston is a 320MW/640MWh battery storage project currently under construction in Selby, North Yorkshire, England.

Construction on the project began in early 2024. Construction is being delivered by lead contractors Sungrow and Morrison Energy Services.

When complete, Monk Fryston’s 640MWh of storage capacity will make it one of the largest battery energy storage systems in the United Kingdom, capable of providing the transmission system operator with access to enough back-up electricity to power the equivalent of over *530,000 homes for up to two hours at a time.

This reliable and flexible power reserve will support security of electricity supply, maintain grid stability and enable more renewable electricity to connect to the UK power grid.

Project history and progress

Monk Fryston was selected as a suitable site for development due to its location, adjacent to National Grid’s Monk Fryston substation and less than two kilometres from Junction 42 of the A1(M).

By directly connecting the battery to the existing transmission network without the need for additional grid infrastructure, SSE Renewables can minimise the built infrastructure impact on the surrounding environment. 

SSE Renewables will continue to liaise with the neighbouring community to ensure construction is completed as efficiently and safely as possible.
