Richfield Solar Farm
Our Richfield Solar Farm project is a proposed c.21MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) array on lands in Hooks and Yoletown near the existing 18 turbine Richfield Wind Farm near Bridgetown in County Wexford. Planning permission for the development was granted by Wexford County Council in 2024.
The proposed development would share a grid connection with the existing 27MW Richfield Wind Farm in south Wexford, which has been operational since 2006.
Delivery of the project would be subject to it securing an economic route to market, as well as a final investment decision by SSE to proceed to construction. Additionally, changes to Ireland’s current grid connection regulations would be required so as to permit the new solar project to dynamically share the current export capacity of the existing wind farm.
Proposed development:
The proposed site area is 44.38ha and would comprise the following:
Linear arrays of mounted solar panels up to 3.2m in height laid out from west to east to optimize the solar gain from a southerly aspect
Construction of internal cable to connect the facility to the existing Richfield Wind Farm 38kV substation
Construction of communication cable ducting to connect the facility to the existing Richfield Wind Farm 38kV substation
The grid connection would be via the existing Richfield Wind Farm 38kV substation
Potential upgrade works to the existing Richfield Wind Farm 38kV substation
Purpose of the development:
Produce renewable solar energy.
Maximise renewable energy output to the existing grid connection. This means no work would be required to the existing grid infrastructure.
