Oxton War Memorial Hall – the heart of community life in Oxton and Channelkirk

£213,220 awarded to the Oxton War Memorial Hall from the Toddleburn Oxton and Channelkirk Community Fund

Oxton War Memorial Hall was opened in 1924, built with money raised to provide a lasting memorial to those fallen in WW1. It operates as an anchor organisation in the village, with the hall being a catalyst for a wide range of services and providing space for grassroots community groups as well as external organisations providing outreach surgeries and training. It is also hired for private parties and fundraising events.

The redevelopment of the hall in Oxton has been in the planning since it was initially discussed by the community in 2012.  A wide range of factors and hurdles emerged for the team at the hall, not least of which was the Covid pandemic, whereby plans have had to change multiple times. In addition to this, in 2018 the community lost their local shop and Post Office. However, the community took action and have since re-established the shop for the people of Oxton and Channelkirk.

The perseverance of the volunteers on both the hall committee as well as the shop has paid off with the integration of the Oxton Community Shop into the hall renovation. A multi-functional, energy-efficient space has been created in the heart of the village, which is filled with a wide range of activities, events and a shop for residents. The project cost almost £600,000 in total and demonstrates the importance of community funds being available when the community needs it.

It was officially reopened on 17 July 2025.

“The new developments at Oxton War Memorial Hall provides an integrated and improved hub where people can have an accessible local store with more space allowing a broader range of products, improved facilities and a point of social contact.

The developments at Oxton War Memorial Hall identified the need and opportunity to integrate Oxton Community Shop into the project from its earliest stages. The shop and hall committee have a mutually supportive relationship and are in regular contact. This partnership will benefit both parties in terms of the impact the new facility will offer local residents.” Jim Tough, Oxton Community Shop
