Castel Favorito And Masseria La Cattiva Wind Farm

– SSE’s combined Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva (17.3 MW) wind farm in Puglia, southern Italy, is now operational and exporting renewable energy into the local grid, marking the delivery of the company’s first Italian renewable electricity asset –

This milestone for SSE’s first onshore wind farm in the country means the wind farm now begins delivering under the long-term Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) signed with Microsoft in 2024, securing a route to market for the renewable energy generation at the 17.3 MW wind farm. A PPA is a long-term agreement to buy electricity from a new wind, solar, or other clean energy project, giving the developer the predictable income needed to build the project.

Under the power purchase agreement, the renewable electricity produced at Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva will support Microsoft's carbon reduction strategy.

Reaching commercial operations at Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva marks a significant milestone in SSE’s growth in Italy.

Construction of the five-turbine wind farm began in early 2025. Around 70 construction roles were supported at the project during peak delivery, boosting the local economy and supply chain in the Puglia region.

Delivery of the operational wind farm represents another step forward in SSE's growing renewables portfolio across southern Europe.

Colin Spain, Director of PPAs at SSE Renewables, said:

“We’re delighted to have reached commercial operations on our first onshore wind farm in Italy, the combined Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva wind farm in Puglia. Since construction began in 2025, our teams and contractors have worked safely and expertly to bring new renewable electricity capacity online. It also demonstrates SSE's role in supporting the growth of wind energy in Italy, one of SSE’s key growth markets in Southern Europe.

“We're also pleased that the site is now delivering under the long-term Corporate Power Purchase Agreement with Microsoft for the power generated at the site. This agreement shows how long-term corporate offtake supports new capacity in Italy and Microsoft’s carbon reduction strategy.”

SSE’s growth in Italy and Southern Europe

The start of commercial operations at the combined Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva (17.3 MW) wind farm in Puglia marks the delivery of SSE’s first operational renewable energy asset in Italy, as the company continues to advance a secured pipeline of more than 600 MW of onshore wind developments in the country.

Delivery of its first operational renewable electricity asset in Italy also represents another step forward in SSE's growing renewables portfolio across southern Europe. The company's operational onshore wind capacity in the region now stands at 109 MW, with a further 55 MW under construction across three sites in Spain and Italy, including a 10 MW wind farm project currently under construction in Puglia.
